Hurricane Emily is the alias of Pōneke based DJ Emily Janus. Since her return to the city that raised her, she has been carving out her space within the dance music community; appearing on numerous line-ups and featuring as a regular at the capital's favourite basement - Club 121. Her high energy sets are scattered with driving rhythms, acid bleeps, unconventional percussion and assertive anthems. Working with local promoters, Emily has co-birthed ‘Tempest’ - a new club night in Ōtepoti which amplifies rising selectors within the dance realm. To help promote diversity in the dance music community, Emily has also been working behind-the-scenes on launching a new collective, Universal Underground. Focusing on facilitating artist development through free / koha DJ/production lessons, the collective will live as a space for women and gender non-conforming individuals.
Rising with finesse, Hurricane Emily is cementing herself as one to watch within the Aotearoa music scene. Dress to sweat.
